Are Figs Keto-Friendly?

Published on August 24, 2020

Figs are small and soft tree fruits with drop shape and sweet taste packed with lots of nutrition. They are high in natural sugars, minerals, and soluble fibre, making them so healthy and delicious.

Moreover, being a rich source of antioxidants makes this fruit very beneficial for skin health. You can add these fruits to many weight-loss diets because they are low in calories. But Are figs keto-friendly?

What is the Keto diet?

First of all, we need to briefly explain what the Keto diet is to understand if figs can be consumed on this diet or not. The Keto diet or Ketogenic diet is a low-carb, high-fat diet, like Atkins.

People follow this diet to lose weight because the keto diet is to get more of your daily calories from fat and protein and fewer carbohydrates and sugar.

When you limit consuming carbs, your body goes into a metabolic state called ketosis.

In this condition, your body starts burning fat instead of carbs for energy. Therefore, you lose excess fat in your body and will lose weight.

A Keto-diet not only is helpful for weight loss but also can reduce blood sugar and insulin levels. That’s why low-carb nuts are so helpful on this diet. But what about figs? Can we eat fresh figs or dried figs on the Keto-diet?

Can we eat figs on a keto diet?

Carbs and sugars of fresh and dried figs

Figs can be consumed fresh, dried, or cooked. When eating this fruit fresh, you consume natural sugar, which is 6.5 grams in every 100 grams (2 medium figs).

Although it’s natural, this amount is still high for a Keto-diet, based on low-carb and high-fat foods. Furthermore, the same amount of figs only contains 0.1 grams of fat and 0.3 grams of protein. To sum it up, figs don’t have the factors that are needed for a keto diet.

However, it doesn’t mean you can never eat this sweet and delicious fruit on the keto diet. Fresh figs can be consumed as a sweet snack, but you need to limit your daily intake, maybe to only one small fig per day.

If you correctly add other keto-friendly foods to your diet, you won’t have a problem enjoying this juicy fruit while you’re on the keto diet.

Generally, only one small fig is allowed per day on a keto diet.

On the other side, even though fresh fruits can find their limited place on this diet, dried and You may never eat canned figs on the keto diet.

Generally, dried fruits contain more sugar than fresh fruits. During drying fruits, they will be dehydrated, and their sugar will be concentrated per gram.

That’s why it is not recommended to consume dried fruits while on a diet. Moreover, it is not clear that every portion of dried figs contains how much sugar.

Therefore, you may think you are eating only 1 fig, but at the same time, you’re overindulging its sugar. If you want to reach a better result on this diet, it’s better to avoid eating dried figs or other dried fruits.

Dried figs have more concentrated sugar and are not a good choice for a keto diet.

Canned figs are like dried figs too. Sometimes they even contain added sugar, which makes them a wrong choice for any weight-loss diet.

Bottom Line

Figs are known as natural candy. They hold lots of benefits for the body, from being packed with vitamins to having a high amount of antioxidants. But when it’s time to have a list of foods for the keto weight-loss diet, we need to take aside all the other benefits and focus on two things, carbs and fat.

With a high amount of sugar and low-fat, typically, this fruit is not keto-friendly. However, you can still enjoy this sweet and delicious fruit in moderation and avoid eating dried and canned types because of their high sugar.
