Ground cardamom is a spice with a sweet flavour that is originated in India but vastly used in other countries. This powdery spice not only gives a great taste to the recipes but also has many benefits to the body. It is beneficial for people with high blood pressure or who have digestive problems. Cardamom ground is also a natural breath freshener. This spice will taste even better if you mix it with cinnamon, nutmeg, clover, or ginger. Cardamom ground is mostly used in pastries.
At natural Moreish, we offer 100% natural ground cardamom with no additives or preservatives.
General Information
Ground cardamom is the aromatic ground seeds of the ginger family’s green cardamom pods (the species Elettaria cardamomum). The pods are spindle-shaped and have a triangular cross-section. Green cardamom or true cardamom is native to southern India as well as Malaysia and Costa Rica. It is the most common variety of the species whose seeds are used as a spice called cardamom that you will see sold in the spice aisle of the grocery shops.
Cardamom has a minty lemon taste with a strong, sweet, pungent flavour and smell. This spice should not be mixed with other whole spices, such as black cardamom. They are different spices with different flavours and aromas. Black cardamom has a cooling menthol note accompanied by a smoky one.
Best Way to Use Ground Cardamom
Cardamom is used as the top choice to spice sweet dishes but also works great in savoury dishes. Ground cardamom pairs well with cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves in Swedish autumn-spiced recipes such as mulled wine or hot cider to Scandinavian cardamom dough. They are also the Indian spice mixture of garam masala, which is used in various Indian and Middle Eastern cuisines.
Add 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom to yummy healthy cardamom milk and tea, or use a pinch of cardamom in sweets, ice creams, smoothies, milkshakes and many more Indian desserts and sweets to make richly flavoured dishes.
Cardamom matches well with poultry, red meat, basmati rice and is ideal in lentils, curries, teas, bread and sausages.
Storage
Ground cardamom should be stored in a cold, dry place away from humidity, direct sunlight and any heat sources. This way, the aroma and taste of cardamom will be preserved for a longer time. It can be kept in an airtight container for up to 6 months. You can also keep it refrigerated for more than a year.
